In addition to New York City, a number of other major US cities will elect mayors in 2021. Places like St. Louis, San Antonio and Omaha elected their mayors in the spring, but November sees remarkable coast-to-coast contests across all time zones. These are important races to watch in some of America's largest metropolitan areas.
Albuquerque
The largest city in New Mexico has more than half a million residents and is the fourth largest city in the Southwest behind Phoenix, Las Vegas and El Paso, Texas. There are three candidates on the ballot: incumbent Democrat Tim Keller, who was first elected in 2017; Republican Eddy Aragon, radio talk show host; and Democrat Manny Gonzales, the sheriff of Bernalillo County. Republican Patrick Sais is also running as a candidate. If no candidate gets 50% plus one vote, there will be a runoff on December 7th.

Atlanta
Fourteen contenders are vying to succeed Democratic Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who chose not to run for re-election after a year of vandalism following demonstrations over George Floyd's death and Atlanta's alarming rise in violent crime, which she described as a "Covid crime wave." run for office. The vote is the first since the Republican-controlled state legislature passed sweeping changes to the electoral laws that imposed significant new barriers to voting -- and offered a glimpse of whether restrictions will affect voter turnout in the state in 2022 and 2024 could. The frontrunners - including former Mayor Kasim Reed, City Council President Felicia Moore and Council Member Andre Dickens -have brought Atlanta's crime rate to the foretheir campaigns. If no candidate gets at least 50% plus one vote, a runoff will be held on November 30th.

Boston
Boston will make history — regardless of who wins Tuesday — with the election of a woman of color after a long history of white male mayors. Boston City Councilwoman Michelle Wu, an advocate for progressive politics, meets more conservative rival Annissa Essaibi George, a city councilwoman at large. Both womenhave highlighted their family rootsas the daughter of immigrants. Wu finished ahead of Essaibi George in Septemberpreliminary municipal election, but both women sent other candidates, including incumbent mayor Kim Janey, to replace themMartin Walshto become the city's first black woman and first woman mayor when Walsh became President Joe Biden's Secretary of Labor in March. Essaibi George appealed to centrist voters in this first round, criticizing some of Wu's ideas as too unrealistic and too expensive, but recent polls have shown Wu to have a lead over the centre-left electorate.

Her opponent, Annissa Essaibi George, conceded earlier in the evening with a large proportion of the votes still awaiting counting. buffalo
Democratic Socialist India Waltondefeated the incumbent mayor by four termsByron Brown in Buffalo's June Democratic primary. Shecould become the first socialist mayora major American city in more than 60 years in a rematch with Brown in which he is running as a registered candidate. The race has garnered national attention as a proxy battle between progressives and moderates for leadership of the party in New York.

UPDATE -- 2:37 p.m. ET -- Acting Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown declared victory Tuesday night in his enlistment campaign for a fifth term. Brown lost the Democratic primary earlier this year to self-proclaimed socialist India Walton. As of 12:30 p.m. ET, approximately 59% of the votes had been cast for enrollable candidates, and 41% had opted for Walton. Brown's campaign accounts for strong showing for registered candidates on the ballot, but Erie County won't begin tabulating registered votes until November 17th. That makes it impossible to say definitively who those voters enrolled, despite Brown's declaration of victory.
Cincinnati
While the city itself has just over 300,000 residents, the metropolitan area of Cincinnati includes more than two million people in three states (Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky). Longtime city councilman and former US Rep. David Mann, who briefly served as mayor in the 1980s and 1990s, faces Hamilton County Court Clerk Aftab Pureval. The two Democrats emerged as the top candidates in a non-partisan primary in May 2021Cincinnati InquirerNoting that Mann described his rival's job as "not particularly important," adding, "Sometimes it seems to me like the clerk over here says, 'Look, I've flown a kite and now it's on the time I take the helm of a kite 747.'”

Cleveland
The city has a population of nearly 400,000 people and the larger region stretching an hour south of Akron and Canton is home to more than 3.5 million. Acting Mayor Frank Jackson, first elected in 2005, declined to run for a fifth term. Democrats Justin Bibb, a nonprofit executive, and Kevin Kelley, the president of the Cleveland City Council, emerged from September's nonpartisan primary, which saw former presidential candidate and US Rep. Dennis Kucinich (who previously ran for mayor at the age of 31 was elected and served from 1977 to 1979) placed third.The voters will also have a sayon a voting initiative that would establish a new civilian commission with ultimate authority over police department policies and procedures, hiring and training, and disciplinary action.

Detroit
Michigan's largest city has a population of more than 600,000 and the larger region (known locally as Metro Detroit) is home to more than 4 million people. Incumbent Mayor Mike Duggan is seeking a third term against fellow Democrat Anthony Adams, who previously served as deputy mayor and president of the city's school board. The two candidates received the most votes in a bipartisan primary in August. Detroit will toovote on two notable poll issues: one on creating a task force that would recommend housing and economic programs to “address the historical discrimination against the black community,” and another on decriminalizing adult possession and therapeutic use of entheogenic plants.

Florida's second-largest city has fewer than half a million residents, but the Miami metro area is home to more than 6 million. The son of a former two-term mayor, Suarez has at times been critical of two GOP heavyweights in Florida — Gov. Minneapolis
The Minneapolis mayoral race has touched on issues like affordable housing, the climate crisis and rent controls, but theThe debate focused on the historical problems faced by the city's police departmentand theAsk how the police can be made more accountable to residents. Incumbent Democratic Mayor Jacob Frey is resisting challenges from 16 candidates. A ranked vote is used in the election and it is likely that no one will get 50% plus one in the first round. Increasingly, the most progressive candidates and allied groups have framed the race as a referendum on Frey's handling of the city's police department and whether he has done enough to curb what critics see as the department's over-monitoring prior to the death of George Floyd. Progressives have lobbied for Sheila Nezhad, a community organizer, and former state Rep. Kate Knuth, both of whom have the support of US Rep. Ilhan Omar, and have joined forces to encourage voters not to rate Frey on their ballots.

Pittsburgh
The second-largest city in Pennsylvania (after Philadelphia), it is home to around 300,000 residents within the city limits and around 3 million people in the metropolitan area. Two-term incumbent Bill Peduto lost the Democratic primary for re-election in May to State Assemblyman Ed Gainey, who will be the city's first black mayor if he wins. Gainey faces Tony Moreno, a former police detective who also lost the Democratic primary but received enough registered votes to secure the Republican nomination.

Seattle
Seattle City Council President Lorena Gonzalez and her predecessor Bruce Harrell are competing to become the next mayor of Washington's largest city, which has about 750,000 metropolitan residents and 4 million in the metropolitan area. The two Democrats emerged as the front-runners in August's bipartisan primary after first-term mayor Jenny Durkan declined to run again.
