Difference between a term paper and a research paper
While a lot of people think soterm papersand research papers are more or less the same, they have significant differences. For example, the purpose of a term paper is to assess a student's level of knowledge on a specific topic.
The essay affects a student's overall grade and must be taken seriously. However, a research paper aims to solve a specific problem and improve a student's research skills. Their formats are also slightly different.
Additionally aresearch paperhas a hypothesis, and students either reject or accept it based on the available data at the end of the essay. In contrast, a term paper is more straightforward and usually tries to support a thesis. For this reason, research papers are longer than term papers. Also, term papers are submitted at the end of a semester, while research papers take longer.
The basic format and structure of the term paper explained
The format of your work determines how you organize your ideas and the flow of the entire article. Therefore, it needs to be a solid outline so that readers can understand your concepts. The formats differ depending on the field of study. However, all term papers have a basic format. The essential parts of the outline are the introduction, the main body and the conclusion. The following is a simple term paper layout to follow when writing your essay.
- front page
- Abstract
- introduction
- Body
- results and discussion
- recommendations
- reference list
front page
It should include your name, course name and number, tutor's name, and submission date. This content should be centered on the page.
Abstract
It is usually a few paragraphs long and describes your work. It informs the reader of your goals and why your issue or topic is worth writing.
introduction
It should be engaging and explain the importance of your problem or topic and how you intend to discuss or solve the problem.
Body

solitary confinement
Solitary confinement is the isolation of criminals in a separate cell. This is usually done as a form of punishment for inmates who break the rules while incarcerated. Today in the United States, approximately 82,000 inmates are held in solitary confinement every day. The average time prisoners are held in confined spaces is between twenty-two and twenty-four hours a day. Those who agree with solitary confinement defend the law, stating that there is a need to discipline prisoners who break the rules while incarcerated. They also argue that this is an essential step in ensuring prisoners who exhibit erratic behavior are disciplined and those with mental disorders are segregated from the rest. While these could arguably be good points, they ignore the fact that the detention process often fails to fulfill its purpose of disciplining and leads to prisoners becoming even more aggressive with aggression. At the same time, it only aggravates the situation of mentally ill prisoners. The process also inflicts psychological harm on inmates due to the nature of the punishment and the space in which it is administered, and is proving to be inhumane due to the nature of its inhumane treatment (Arrigo and Bullock 2008). Research shows that solitary confinement can be responsible for repeat offenders and the increase in violence within prison walls. Solitary confinement should be abolished as it has shown to be more detrimental than beneficial to the inmate, the prison and society at large.
Proponents of solitary confinement argue that prison guards and guards must take the necessary precautions to protect themselves while working in prison. This means prison staff should have full control over prisoners. In order to be in control, prison staff must fully control inmate mobility to reduce the likelihood of incidents of violence and harm done to other prisoners or staff. In this case, solitary confinement helps control the movement of prisoners who exhibit violent acts by restricting their movements and thus ensuring that they do not come into contact with anyone they could harm. Solitary confinement is prevalent among prisoners, who are often caught breaking the rules, being aggressive and committing habitual crimes (Grassian 1983). The institution should guide their behavior and teach them a lesson. Punishment is usually used as a last resort when all other measures of control, including pepper spray and bondage chairs, have been exhausted. The methods staff use to detain inmates who violate regulations are not well defined, making it difficult to understand when the individual's human rights have been violated. In the cases where a prison staff member fails to protect an inmate and the prisoner is eventually injured or killed, the staff are criminally charged for failing to protect the prisoner.
The law states that no harm may be done to an inmate while an officer is present, and failure to protect the inmate from injury carries severe penalties. In one case in 2005, a group of officers were found guilty of negligence when they failed to protect a prisoner who was murdered by another prisoner while they were on a prison bus. Three of the officers were reportedly found guilty of negligence, while one of them was found guilty of gross negligence while the attack was taking place. The family received an $18 million settlement for the murder. Since the state employed the officials officially, the state had to pay around two hundred thousand dollars for each of the officials. The civil servant convicted of gross negligence received no support from his employers (Cooper v. Rodriguez 2014). The cases of the prisoner's murder also demonstrate the crucial need to have the prisoner under control at all times. This ensures that there are fewer cases of a similar nature. The process allows for the separation of prisoners exhibiting violent behavior and thus allows for the prevention of activities that could result in harm to one of the inmates. By keeping the inmate in solitary confinement, he cannot harm the others as he is closely monitored at all times.
Several concerns have currently been raised about the impact of solitary confinement on an inmate's health. The investigation concluded that the act had dangerous effects on an inmate's mental health and well-being. This was first observed during the Korean War when prisoners were held in solitary confinement. This led to research into the effects of isolation on prisoners' mental health (Haney 2003). It suggested isolating people from all social interactions and denying them any interaction with other people. They can begin to lose touch with reality and become unaware of their surroundings. It is argued that even a few days of confinement can completely alter normal brain patterns, resulting in a loss of a touch of reality.
Over time, the prisoner loses full consciousness and his attention is completely damaged. This means they are unable to use interaction with external stimulation, leading them to engage in hyperreactivity when declared mentally ill. The damage is often permanent, meaning that even after they are released, they are unable to mingle with society again. In 2008, Evan, an inmate sentenced to solitary confinement after being aggressive with an officer, murdered Tom Clement, the head of the prison facility where he had been held after his release, by shooting him dead (Zennie 2013) . This is just one example of a case where solitary confinement only worsened an inmate's situation, making him even more aggressive, leading him to commit a greater crime than he had previously been convicted of. Sometimes it makes them even more dangerous due to their insufficient attention.
It is illegal under United States law to inflict pain on an inmate that could result in an injury such as organ failure. It also prevents torture, which can cause mental distress because it risks damaging the brain (Grassian 1983). It has been reported that fifteen days imprisonment is the maximum sentence, beyond which irreversible psychological damage can occur. This is after many inmates have spent even longer periods in solitary confinement. Although it allows aggressive inmates to be separated from the others, it risks irreversible damage to the inmate's mental health and makes it more dangerous to reintegrate them into society than it originally was. Extreme cases of isolation increase cases of mental disorders in prisoners.
Solitary confinement should be stopped as it has been shown to have a serious impact on a patient's mental health. Even with shorter periods of incarceration, prisoners showed higher levels of aggression than at the start of incarceration. At the same time, the infrastructure associated with the procedure is quite expensive and causes a large gap in government funds. The reality is that once a prisoner has been in solitary confinement long enough, upon his release he becomes a danger to himself and to the society that he expects to welcome back. They leave with feelings of revenge and anger towards their punishers and the rest of the community. Therefore, it is more valuable for a state to find other ways to separate inmates showing signs of aggression than solitary confinement, as it could worsen their condition.
Despite the benefits that solitary confinement brings, it has been found that it often hinders the justice system more than it helps. The fact is very expensive. This is due to the number of employees required. In solitary confinement, the cost of maintaining the facility proves to be much higher than that of a normal cell. The cost of the detention facility is also very high. The very funds required for solitary confinement reduce the funds that could be used for other programs that would benefit citizens, such as education programs or drug abuse prevention programs. At the same time, in most cases it does not discipline the prisoner. Instead, inmates emerge from solitary confinement with feelings of heightened belligerence and reprisals. The state government should therefore interrupt solitary confinement because it contradicts the goal of improving prison sentences and eats up state funds that could serve better purposes.
