Thirteen Democrats and two Republicans are runningMayoral elections in New York Cityon June 22, after theNew York Electoral Board. They are vying for a chance to run America's largest city as it faces rising crime, the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and a host of other problems.

A retired former New York City Police Department Captain, Adams is a staunch supporter of the NYPD and works on a platform that involves increased policing. However, the former officer criticized the department and called out racism in the NYPD. Adams has been a fixture on the New York political scene for decades — and has made many friends and foes along the way — and has done soargued that he was the candidate best equipped to tackle a surge in violent crime. The former New York State Senator is running for the second black mayor in New York City history. He has the backing of a number of major unions and local leaders, including Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

Work:Former JPMorgan Chase executive and entrepreneur

The technologist and entrepreneur founded 12 small businesses in New York City and co-founded an initiative called NYC Votes to promote citywide democracy. Chang wants to implement universal child care,Help Broadway recoverand innovate government technology. The son of Korean immigrants, he co-founded the CUNY Technology Apprenticeship Program and served on the New York City Campaign Finance Board and the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Public Library. Chang would be the city's first Asian-American mayor.

Work:Lead strategist and advisor overseeing Harvard University campus expansion

A former cabinet minister in the Obama administration, Donovan served as secretary of housing and urban development during the 2008 housing crisis and later as director of the Office of Management and Budget. He runs a platform to build "15 Minute Neighborhoods," a plan that aims to get New Yorkers with schools, transportation and groceries within 15 minutes of their homes. Prior to his time in the Obama administration, Donovan served as commissioner of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development under former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Donovan was criticized by his rivals for having an independent spending group almost entirely funded by his father.

Aaron Foldenauer

As an attorney who has practiced labor disputes and voting rights, Foldenauer's platform seeks to rebuild New York City's economy with a focus on small business and real estate owners. Foldenauer hopes to reshape New York tourism, has a healthy eating plan and wants to set up an SMS service for subway riders to report incidents. Foldenauer ran for New York City Council in Lower Manhattan but lost in 2017.

As Commissioner for New York City's Sanitation Department, Garcia managed 10,000 employees and directed the city's garbage collection, water distribution, and snow removal. Garcia, who runs on a platform focused on the health and safety of New York City, says she would bring her crisis management skills and local systems experience to City Hall. Garcia headed New York's emergency feeding program early onCoronavirus Pandemieduring which time he served as a task force commanderHurricane Sandy. She was endorsed in May by the New York Times editorial board, which wrote that she "best understands how to get New York back on its feet and has the temperament and experience to do it." If elected, Garcia would become the city's first female mayor.

The former investment banker and Citigroup executive's campaign focuses on spurring an economic recovery, and his platform includes a job accelerator to bring back 50,000 jobs in New York City. McGuire, a black man, says his lived experience enables him to enact renewed public safety and justice policies in New York City. Raised by a single mother in Dayton, Ohio, McGuire previously served on the boards of the Citi Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Citigroup, and De La Salle Academy, a small private school in New York City. McGuire does not participate in the city's generous Matching Funds program.

The left is split and looking for a way in the wrong New York mayoral campaign

A former non-profit executive and public school teacher in New York City, Morales wants to guarantee New York City residents housing and desegregate the city's public schools, and has called for "defunding the police; Funding people.” As a single mother, Morales has worked to build support communities for young people, including homeless youth. Morales, the Brooklyn-raised daughter of Puerto Rican parents, would become the city's first Afro-Latin mayor. However, her campaign has recently been hampered by staff infighting and the departure of her campaign manager. If elected, Morales would be the city's first woman mayor.

Work:Rapper, former congressional candidate

Prince, a non-binary rapper, wants to give New Yorkers $2,000 a month as a universal basic income, proposes three-and-a-half-day workweeks and health care for everyone, tries to eradicate homelessness, and wants to turn the New York City Police Department into a "love team." Prince ran for Congress in New York's 7th District last year but lost in the primary to 14-term incumbent Nydia Velázquez.

The New York Comptroller's campaign underscores his experience with citywide government. Stringer has been the auditor of the Big Apple's finances since 2013 and has managed the city's five public pension funds. Previously, Stringer was a New York State Assemblyman and President of the Borough of Manhattan. Its platform includes early childhood education and the creation of a "Chief Health Officer" focused on public health. A graduate of New York City Public Schools and the CUNY system, Stringer got his start in politics as an advisor to Jerry Nadler, who was a member of the New York State Assembly at the time. In April, Stringer was accused of sexual harassment by a former political ally. He has denied the allegations, leading some prominent supporters to withdraw their support. He has garnered the support of a number of high-profile unions.

Taylor, a Brooklyn native who grew up in public housing, is running on a platform to expand affordable public housing and "decriminalize poverty." As a businesswoman who started a general contractor company, Taylor built a nonprofit organization to provide women- and minority-owned businesses access to opportunity, citywide and state government, and elected officials. She also supports tThe legalization of recreational marijuana. If elected, she would be the city's first female mayor.

Wiley, a longtime civil rights attorney and activist, wants to create a "New Deal" for New York that would focus on centering communities of color with a $10 billion investment in infrastructure, incentives and employment programs, according to her platform. She is also driving a "community first" plan to combat itclimate changeand proposes a transformation of the NYPD. Wiley previously served as an advisor to outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio and previously worked for both the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and the American Civil Liberties Union. She was supported byNew York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, a member of the House Democrat leadership, and enjoys the backing of one of the city's largest unions. If elected, Wiley would become the city's first woman mayor.

Wright runs a platform focused on working-class communities and plans to raise the minimum wage and expand affordable housing with homeownership opportunities for all New York City residents. After being wrongly convicted and imprisoned, Wright pursued law school and became a lawyer. He is also the executive producer of ABC's "For Life," a fictional TV show based on his life story.

The feisty former presidential candidate has struggled on promises to lift the city out of its pandemic haze. He wantsprovide a basic income for some low-income residents of New York City, providing direct cash payments of about $2,000 per year to those who need it most. The son of Taiwanese immigrants, Yang worked as a lawyer before founding a number of startups focused on healthcare and education. He is considered one of the frontrunners in the Democratic primary, though he has been criticized for not having previously contested a mayoral race and wondered if he has the experience to take on the job. Yang, if elected, would become the city's first Asian-American mayor.

Mateo, a Dominican-American immigrant and entrepreneur, started a carpet company that later became a contract company. He also established a trade school and training program on Rikers Island for non-violent first-time inmates. Mateo says he runs partly to reduce crime and fight bureaucracy and high taxes. A city activist, Mateo has served as president of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers and advocate for bodega owners, most recently as the founder of United Bodegas of America. Though he's supported both Democratic and Republican politicians in the past, Mateo parroted it in a recent debateFormer President Donald Trump's Election Lies of 2020.

The political activist and radio show host has long been a controversial, outspoken critic of crime in New York City and has focused much of his campaign on the recent spike. Sliwa, who founded the Guardian Angels, a group of volunteers who patrol subways in New York City and across the country, says he wants to "pay back the police," and his platform includes a tax plan that would cut property taxes. Sliwa also believes in the need for professional programs in New York City high schools.
